Back in July, a Year 8 and 9 linguists visited York St John University for a series of innovative workshops under the title 'Careers using languages'. The day gave the students the chance to meet people who use language as part of their working lives and to begin to understand the advantages that being fluent in another language can bring.
The ‘Could you be an Interpreter’ session was fast paced and highly interactive with demonstrations by the two Interpreters and a chance for us all to “have a go” at this fascinating skill.
The session that seemed to stand out for the students was the Languages and Marketing workshop which looked at what is involved in marketing a product overseas. Our product was Yorkshire Blue cheese and we were provided with a tasty sample on each table. The students enthusiastically launched themselves into producing marketing aids for the cheese in French and Spanish and Mr Bell managed to consume more cheese than most of us eat in a month (I must admit it was delicious!)
