What if the future designer of a computer game to rival Fortnite or Call of Duty is a student at Ryburn right now? Last week a group Year 8s were given the chance to explore their potential as game designers as well as find out more about the creative industries.
The special creative careers day was run in collaboration with Huddersfield University Computer Games Design course. Working with Mrs Hughes, students worked on designing, developing and animating their own computer game creation based around the idea of resetting a virtual world devastated by a deadly virus.
The project is part of the school’s Aspire Programme which aims to raise career aspirations and confidence through creative arts and media and to encourage students to consider a wider range of prospective job opportunities.
The day kicked off with video of guest speakers from the course speaking about computer game design and careers in this field as well as working in creative industries in general.
Students then got to work drawing up a story-board for their own game design including identifying a villain and hero, considering a place or platform for the action, how to win and even elements like power-ups. Next was the creation of plasticine models of their characters and a platform or scene setter and then the really exciting part - creating a stop-motion animation of a scene from their game!
There were certainly some excellent creative skills on show throughout the day. Look out for our Ryburn students as future stars in the creative industries!
