Course outline

The GCSE Mathematics content is divided into six main domains:

  • Number

  • Algebra

  • Ratio, Proportion and Rates of Change

  • Geometry and measures

  • Probability

  • Statistics

The teaching will enable student to develop understanding of mathematical methods and concepts. It will also allow the student to reason, make deductions and draw conclusions. They will also learn to interpret and communicate mathematical information. These are all very useful and highly regarded attributes to possess.

In the GCSE there is an emphasis on problem solving and mathematical reasoning. Students will also be required to learn formulae.

The tier of entry for students will be decided following continuous assessment throughout Year 10 and 11.


The future

GCSE Mathematics is an important foundation for many courses and careers. Almost all jobs and careers require a Mathematics GCSE. A grade 7 or above can allow you to continue on to study Mathematics at A-level which is highly regarded and provides the opportunity for progression onto numerous courses in Higher Education. It’s a great subject to pursue for careers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Computing.
