2020 Exams update

Cancelling exams is something no Education Secretary would ever want to do, however these are extraordinary times and this measure is a vital but unprecedented step in the country’s efforts to stop the spread of coronavirus.
— Education Secretary Gavin Williamson

The school closure is a shock for everyone, but especially for our students in Year 11 and 13 who were deep in preparing for their exams and you have many questions about what will happen. The government has now provided more details of what to expect.

Please use the links above to read the full details and hopefully find answers to most of your questions. We have summarised these below.

Key points

  • All exams this summer including A-levels, GCSEs and other qualifications have been cancelled as part of the coronavirus response. This will not change.

  • The government, exam bodies, Ofqual, schools, colleges and universities are committed to ensuring that all students receive grades which fairly reflect their performance, and can progress on to the next stage of their lives.

  • Grades will be calculated using a range of evidence and data, including teacher judgements, mock exams and other assessments, prior attainment and modules or coursework already completed.

  • There will also be some opportunity for students to ‘resit’ exams later in the year or in summer 2021. We do not yet know how this will work.

Please be assured that all the staff at Ryburn are are doing everything we can to ensure that all students receive the grades that their hard work and efforts deserve. We will of course keep you updated if we receive any further information.

It really wasn’t the send off we would have wanted for our students this year. There’s a huge sense of anticlimax, and many of you will be disappointed at not being able to sit the exams you have been working so hard towards. We have a huge sense of community and so many close relationships at school, and it feels very weird for us all not being there. Your teachers feel the same way.

We’ll be doing our best to keep a sense of community going and keep our spirits up through social media, so make sure you’re following us on Instagram and Facebook.
